Adding a Bold Touch to Interior Design with Red-Painted Stairs

Adding a Bold Touch to Interior Design with Red-Painted Stairs

Red is a particularly bold choice for a staircase, but this doesnā€™t mean that it canā€™t work as part of a homeā€™s interior design. If you have been considering having a red-painted staircase in your home, or if you want to incorporate red into the colour scheme of your interior, we have a few suggestions on how you can make it work for your property.

Pairing Other Paints with Red-Painted Stairs

If you have been considering designs for stairs that incorporate both red and another colour, we can give you a few suggestions of how this might work best. If you would prefer to keep your staircase completely red, you can simply skip over this to take a look at our section on Accessories to match your staircase.

Black and Red-Painted Stairs

Within a colour scheme, black and red pair wonderfully, looking sleek and sharp in a modern home and elegantly Gothic in an older home with more traditional features. However, the colour pairing is usually more suitable for an open staircase, as black and deeper shades of red donā€™t bounce light around very much. This can make small or narrow staircases look extremely closed-in and claustrophobic.

White and Red-Painted Stairs

Both black and white paint pair well with red-painted stairs, and the advantage of using a crisp white paint in combination with red paint is that it can be used in smaller spaces. This is because the lighter colour will help to open the space up and make it look brighter.

Red and white also presents a particularly aesthetically pleasing advantage; you can choose to paint the stair treads red, and leave the risers white, or you can do the opposite and paint the risers red and leave the treads white. This often makes for a unique-looking staircase.

Brown and Red-Painted Stairs

If you want every part of your home to feel warm and welcoming, ensuring your hallway and staircase are decorated in warm tones is a great place to start. This might mean pairing red-painted stairs with other colours that are usually considered warm, such as browns, tans, beiges and yellows. These can then be paired with wood furniture and other decor throughout the space, helping it to look ā€œlived inā€ and keeping it cosy.

Accessories for Red-Painted Stairs

Red-painted stairs are likely to be bold enough to draw the eye by themselves, but this doesnā€™t have to mean that the look of your staircase is complete. If you want to add a complementing or contrasting colour or pattern, or to create something truly impressive to visitors, you can always add accessories. Weā€™ve listed some ideas here on this to help get you started:

Stair Runners

If you have decided to keep your red-painted stairs one tone, but you still want to add in further decoration and some ornamental touches, then you can always do this by adding stair runners. These gorgeous stair carpets come in a range of shapes and sizes to fit a variety of staircase designs, and they are available in modern, traditional, plain, and even animal print to complement any given style or pattern.

To give you an idea of how this might look, imagine that you are intending on having dark red painted stairs; for a timeless, classically styled staircase, you might consider pairing this with a traditional runner. This could be a design from our Shah collection, perhaps Beige or Green depending on other features and elements of your interior.

Meanwhile, for a modern home with a brighter red staircase, you might choose a Pure Cream design from our plain runners, or a Tartan runner in Gold from our modern and contemporary collections.

Stair Rods for Stair Runners

If you do decide that stair runners are right for your red-painted stairs, you can also choose to complete the aesthetic appeal by adding a set of stair rods to them. We provide these in a range of classic and contemporary styles, as well as a myriad of finishes, in order to suit any staircase in any home. Most finishes will work with a red staircase, but we would particularly recommend brass, nickel, bronze, or wood finishes to blend seamlessly into the colour scheme.
