The wider the staircase, the better for this design. We’d also recommend you install the shelves higher up at the bottom of the stairs and to either match the shelves with the colour of the staircase wall, or choose shelving/a wall that provides a contrast to the other (a white wall and brown oak shelving).

This could be as simple as painting your staircase one colour and your hallway another (be sure to keep to a Pantone).
