Unique & Affordable Hall Stairs and Landing Ideas

When it comes to thinking about hall stairs and landing ideas, there are a few major factors to consider. First, what’s the current interior design theme running through your home? Do you want your hall stairs and landing idea to align with it? Or are you considering a full interior design makeover?

Second, what’s your budget and are you prepared for a little DIY? These questions are important to consider when considering hall stairs and landing ideas.

Your hallway and landing are key focal points of your home and how they’re designed is crucial. As providers of stylish stair rods and premium carpet runners, we know what looks good on stairs and have offered some of our favourite hall stairs and landing ideas to transform your home.

Line Your Stairs with Rods and a Carpet Runner

Stair runners

Your stairs typically take up a large portion of your home or at least your hallway, so it’s important they look good! One of the most popular and traditional ideas is to line your staircase with carpet runners and door bars. This is a favourable design option because you have so many options to choose from.

Carpet runners and bars look fantastic when combined with any residential staircase, but for a truly authentic design, we’d recommend partnering them with a wooden floor staircase.

Line Your Staircase Wall with Plants

Hallways are surprisingly easy to decorate and create depending on your budget and design capabilities. If you are working with a budget, why not buy a couple of plants to hang on your staircase wall? All you need is a few shelves installed and then line them with your favourite plants.

The wider the staircase, the better for this design. We’d also recommend you install the shelves higher up at the bottom of the stairs and to either match the shelves with the colour of the staircase wall, or choose shelving/a wall that provides a contrast to the other (a white wall and brown oak shelving).

We actually have a dedicated article on how to decorate your staircase wall for more ideas.

Consider Wallpaper Ideas for Your Staircase Wall

If you don’t have enough wall space to install shelving or you don’t like the idea of a plant-based wall, why not consider wallpaper designs? There are thousands of unique wallpaper designs to choose from, but our advice would be to make sure it complements your hallway flooring and hallway colours. This is extremely cost-effective hall stairs and landing ideas

Optional Storage on Your Landing

If your staircase is an L-shape with a large stair landing area, why not consider utilising that extra space? Depending on its size, you could place a small table, storage unit, vanity wall or simply artwork on the landing area. One idea we’re a fan of is creating a reminder shelf or space for a “to do” list. This could be as simple as installing a shelf or table with a “to do” chalkboard on it.

Paint Your Staircase

One of the most popular DIY projects is to paint your own staircase. Over time, our staircases begin to wear and tear, leaving the paintwork much to be desired. Painting your staircase allows you to completely reinvent its appearance to align with your existing interior design desires. From here, you can choose to install new bannisters or paint your existing ones and you may want to consider purchasing carpet runners and rods for a truly authentic design that will also help protect your staircase. As stated previously, we have a range of colours

We have an article dedicated to stair decorating ideas and how to paint your own stairs if you’d like to learn more about this.

Two-tone Your Hall Stairs & Landing

Another simple but impactful decorating idea is to go for a two-tone colour scheme. This could be as simple as painting your staircase one colour and your hallway another (be sure to keep to a Pantone). For example, a predominantly white or cream hallway would go well with a black or wooden staircase. You could even take it a step further by installing tiles in your hallway – ideal for families with children or pets as they’re able to withstand high levels of foot traffic.

If you’re looking to paint the staircase wall, or the side of the staircase but don’t have room of the budget for panelling, you can use a two-tone colour scheme to replicate the appearance of panels at a fraction of the price.

Transform Your Landing Space into a Home Office

Considering many people are now able to work from home, why not consider revamping your staircase and landing into a cosy home working space? This will of course only be possible if you have the right amount of space, but it’s definitely worth considering if you do. Some maisonettes in the UK may boast this type of staircase landing structure but don’t know what to do with it. This idea can add an extra room to your home and maximise space in others (if your office was originally in your living room or bedroom, for example).
